Investing is for the long term. This doesn't mean one should just take the buy and hold approach. If you did that for the last 10 years, your portfolio would probably not have grown in value at all.
The Strategy
I believe in an actively managed portfolio. The framework is to hold a core set of stocks that has long term growth potential. In the meantime, a trading portfolio can be set up to take advantage of short-term trades in these stocks. There is no harm taking advantage of short-term profit opportunities. The benefit of this approach is although sometimes you may be sitting on a paper loss in the short-term, you can have the patience to wait for the loss to become profit as the stock is worth keeping for the long-term in the first place.
With this framework, hopefully you will be able to capture short-term profits but at the same time participate in the patient long term growth of your portfolio.
